Hydration Systems - Which Hydration System is Right For You?
If you read my first article on hydration systems, you will know that hydration packs come
in a variety of sizes, styles and of course many models.
Depending on the sport or leisure activity you participate in, will help you determine quickly which hydration system will be right for your
outdoor activity.
Having the right gear, and desired packs that carry the right amount of water, will keep you hydrated, and will allow you to maintain your
athletic performance, plus most importantly, prevent you from getting dehydrated! This especially holds true when you happen to be spending a
good part of your day in the extremely hot sun!
We will list a number of hydration system packs below and categorize them into the sport it is designed for, and provide you a list of
important features and benefits each pack includes. In the end, you’re the one that will decide which one is best for you, and who knows, what we
indicate that is best for a particular sport, you may think differently and choose another one that you feel is right for your activity.
We recommend that you use our hydration bag options listed as a guideline, and if you wish to find more available hydration backpacks, you can
easily visit our “All Listed Sites” page for more product reviews, and many options that are offered by our listed online suppliers.
Hiking & Camping: You may come across pack terms such as mountain packs, hiking hydration systems, and possible trail packs. All
apply to the same concept of hiking and camping, however, the features you want to see this example of a hiking pack listed below.
 |
High Sierra Drench: I chose this
particular backpack model, because it offers great features for hikers and campers alike. What’s great about this pack is that it
provides 600-denier Duralite® and Duralite(R) ripstop. This material is strong and can withstand many elements and the rough terrain.
The Size is 18" x 9" x 2" and only weighs 2 lbs., this pack has a large main compartment that holds a 2-liter water reservoir (70
oz.), and includes a hands-free water reservoir pressure valve, and insulated water tube cover to keep your water refreshingly cool
and clean. Some other key pack features are the Vapel™ mesh Airflow™ adjustable shoulder strap, Adjustable waist belt to help secure
the pack, and an adjustable sternum strap that helps stabilize the pack. |
Snowboarding: When you’re hitting the powder, and the mountain is giving you the best ride, you want the right hydration system pack
that will allow you to spend endless hours taking advantage of the mountains generosity. With that in mind this pack example below is
my selection that can offer you all the features to keep you boarding all day!
 |
CamelBak SnoBlast™: The new
SnoBlast™ allows boarders to keep your gear and water conveniently at hand. This pack is expandable, and it can carry as much or as
little as you need, so when you want to attach your board, extra layers, and your tunes, this backpack has you covered! This pack
size is 10" x 19" x 6", with a capacity of 1400 cu. in., and weighs only 2 lbs., and when you fill the packs extremely large
reservoir, that holds a whopping 100 ounce (3.0 L) capacity of clean, refreshing water, it will only weigh 6.46 lbs. Storage capacity
is more than sufficient, and you will find additional unique bag features such as expandable, organized storage that holds extra
clothes, goggles, and food, easy-to-use retention system that holds a board vertically or skis diagonally, and a padded front pocket
that holds CD or MP3 player and tools, because you need the tunes. |
Running: Runners have different needs when you are looking to stay hydrated, and even though many carry the water bottle style
harnesses, this system may have inconveniences that only an experienced runner would know. I chose a unique waist pack style hydration system
that I feel would be an excellent alternative to the bottle.
 |
CamelBak FlashFlo™: For runners
and walkers that are normally accustom to the 2-bottle fanny pack, this FlashFlo waist pack system easily holds just as much water.
It not only will keep you fully hydrated, but it is very comfortable, stable, and is large enough to hold a snack or CD/MP3 player!
With a 98 cu. in. capacity, breathable mesh waist-belt keeps you cool, and only weighing 3.93 lbs. when the packs 45 oz reservoir is
completely full. The size being 8.5" x 8.5" x 3.5", it generously includes an external zip pocket for keys and essentials, and a
secure outer pocket to fit your CD or MP3 player. For stability you will find a side-cinch compression, and it will keep the load
stable & secure, and for your safety while running in high traffic areas, it includes reflectivity for increased low-light
visibility. |
Cycling: We will discuss hydration packs for cyclists last, and if I’m correct many biking enthusiasts, whether experienced or novice.
The last thing you want is a backpack system that is going to be bulky, heavy, and uncomfortable while your riding. For these very reasons I
selected a popular cycling pack that includes many features for your particular requirements.
 |
CamelBak HydroBak®: The HydroBak is a great hydration pack that
has a streamlined design, is tailored to the individual that looks for hydration completely on the go! With a reservoir capacity: 50
oz. (1.5 L), which is equivalent to two water bottles, weighs only 4.10 lbs when the bags reservoir is completely filled. Cyclists
really like this hydration pack, because it’s size at 13.5" x 8" x 1.75" and the 92 cu. in capacity offers much needed storage space.
Added features are easy convenient filling with external access to the OMEGA Reservoir, reflectivity on harness and pack increases
low-light visibility, and the convenient low-profile design keeps this pack stable and doesn't interfere with your helmet. |
These are a few of selections that make drinking water, and keeping your body hydrated during your physical activity simple and convenient.
